All,
I am trying to figure out what the original hood numbers would be for the 1951 M38 I'm restoring. The Serial number from the original data plate is MC55106. I have checked the willysmjeeps.com Serial Number Data Base but do not see any similar numbers to correlate with. Any advise is appreciated.
Shawn is correct. That would be a March 1952 jeep. Often the DMV does not know, nor does the person registering the jeep back when it was surplused.
What we usually recomend is to use the last 5 digits of your vehicle serial number as the last 4 or 5 digits of the hood number so later on it is easy to tell that the original hood number was not available.
There is not currently any list of hood numbers vs. serial numbers available. It appears so far that the military did not keep those records after vehicles were surplused.
To compound the problem, vehicle hood numbers were not applied in the same order that the serial number plates were put on.
I would use 209 as your first three and the 55106.
20955106
209 are the first three digits of hood numbers for early 1952 per the last time I checked. I am away from my home computer that has all my data on it right now.
Anyone else have any suggestions? _________________ Ryan Miller

"The title for the jeep (which I've had for 35 years) showed 1951. I wouldn't know how to determine the Delivery date, Contract #, hood # etc???”
MC55106 is a February 1952 M38. It’s contract number would be DA-33-019-ORD-43. The 209xxxxx hood number range is correct. _________________ Wes K
