Question concerning chassis / frame numbers . I have just bought another jeep . It appears to be an m38 but ive noticed that there are mitsubishi logos on the axles .Also the chassis number starts with the letters MD-. Were any jeep chassis ever produced with this serial number (its located on the frame just behind the front bumper ....drivers side)Im just trying to work out what it actually is, that i have here.

Willys did not put chassis serial numbers on Post WWII military chassis. If you have found an MDXXXXX number it was placed there in the field by someone.

To determine if you have an M38A1 (MD) frame look for the following:

1-Front frame rails boxed in from bumper to master cylinder.
2-Bumper mounts directly to front frame rail tips and earlier style gussets were not used.
3-There will be a square machine gun mount plate on the cross member just behind the transmission cross member.
4-There will not be any battery tray on the top of the right front frame rail but there will be a small support bracket for the M series voltage regulator straight across from the brake master cylinder.
5-The front springs have there pivots to the front and their "U" shackles to the rear.
6-The front cross member under the radiator will be a stamped steel inverted "U" shape.
