Looks like the dash plates were mounted directly to the dash. Definately a much earlier jeep then the serial number shown. But also a very solid basis for a nice M38 project or driver.
I would suggest the seller use some DOT 3 brake fluid on the patent plate on the front end of the right rear wheel house to expose the tub's serial number since it appears he does not have the dash serial plate.
This would mean the jeep is at least above MC26272.
This indicates the jeep is before MC34151 and the dash cluster is correct for serial before MC34151.
These photos show the jeep is actually a serial number between MC26272 (JUL 51) and MC34151 (SEP 51).
This is the patent plate and will probably have a serial number on it betwee MC26272 & MC 34151.
Again I want to point out this is a very, very nice condition M38 for a really solid restoration project and even with the missing 24 volt stuff and the electric fuel pump and civvy ignition it still is an excellent starting point.
Another note on serials, many DMV's up through the late 60's/early 70's used the engine serial number to title vehicles. It is possible this jeep had an engine serial MC63546 in it when first civilian title was obtained and the RMCXXXXX serial engine was added later. _________________ Wes K

if i sand and find the hood number can a close dod/serial # be figured out?
I talked to the previous owner again and he tells me that the plates were removed at the surplus auction they aquired another set just to have. this would explain the discrepencies. _________________ 3/52 M38 ser#59697 hood#20908270
The real serial is there on that Patent plate on the right rear wheelhouse.
Hood number can put you close but then it may or may not be that jeep's hood.
Takes 5 minutes and a small amount of DOT 3 brake fluid to determine what the real serial number is on that patent plate. Don't use any abrasives on the plate. It is very soft and the numbers are not stamped on it. They are etched on it very lightly.
Does the prior owner have the SF-97 the jeep left the surplus yard with? That is the form required by the DMV to title the jeep with a civilian title . It is the only acceptable proof of ownership at a DMV for vehicles purchased from the government. That document will have the real serial on it. The plate were not normally removed at auctions. _________________ Wes K
