On the m38a1 I own there are two round rods that extend from the top of the firewall to each side of the radiator shroud . I do not see these mentioned (or shown) in any of the manuals I have. Were they added later in service or just not significant enough to be worth mentioning. Judging by the quality of the welding of the angle brackets to the firewall they sure don't look factory installed. Also, the passenger side rod seems to interfere with the ducting between the air cleaner and the carb.....can this rod be removed or is it essential to prevent the radiator from hitting the fan? Thanks.

they are factory, they added the rods after they went to the fixed grill version in 1953

Yes they are important to security of the radiator.

Unless your air ducting is not stock or your rod is bent there shouldn't be any interference issues.

In your TM 9-8014 page 101 look at the M170 illustration.
