Early M38 starter used 3/8" bolts and late M38 and all M38A1/M170 starters used the 1/2" bolts.

Early M38. 3/8"-16NC-2 x 1 1/4" bolts 2 each.

Late M38 starter and all MD/MD-A. The coarse thread bolt is 1/2"-13NC-3 x 1 1/4" and the fine thread bolt is 1/2"-20NF--3 x 3 1/2".

This is all right there in the M38 parts manual ORD 9 pages 139 and 140 and in the M38A1 parts manual ORD 9 page 145 right underneath the thingy called "Starter". Wink

Wes,

Once again, thanks. I looked it up but was not 100% on the size when I was at work. Did not write it down.
