Finally got my 1952 M38A1 running this weekend. Bought it several years ago and tinkered with it over the years. This forum has been great with answers and support!
Only problem with this jeep now is that water flows out of the radiator overflow tube. Need to do some trouble shooting.

Start with a pressure check of the cap. If the engine runs fine, doesn't overheat and there is adequate evidence the coolant is flowing correctly and the thermostat functions correctly then it is usually a weak pressure cap. _________________ Wes K

Hi,
Been doing some searching of these forums and I am confused. Some places it is mentioned radiator caps should be 7# while others it is mentioned to be 4.5#. According to the SNL the caps are the same for both M38 and M38A1 so I don't think my confusion arises there. And according to the manuals both have 4.5# caps.
Wes, on one of the topics you listed several part numbers for caps. Are those all 7#? Would a 4 in the part number be appropriate for the 4# caps?
Which cap should I use on my M38A1?
Thanks for the help,
Kendall
The M38A1/M170 correct system pressure is 4 1/2 lbs.
The Stant TR-101 or R7 and the NAPA Ballcamp 4-1144 are 4 LB caps.
In the numbers I have listed for a dozen different manufacturers the 4 does not represent 4 PSI. If you look closely at the Dennis Spence MV parts list book the 17 brands/part number caps he listed are in most every case simple variations of the Stant number which always includes a "7". They are all 4 LB caps. _________________ Wes K

On my M38 when I initially filled the radiator, I filled it right to the top. When I first ran it, I noticed a little puddle on the ground and upon investigating found it coming from the overflow tube. I think it was just overfilled, because it's fine now. When I pull the cap now, the antifreeze is just covering the top of the fins.
