Am I right when I assume that the 3' rod I pull out from the center of my steering wheel is there to check the oil in my steering box? |

There's a threaded plug on top of the steering gear. Wipe off the case, remove the plug, fill until full with lube and replace. Job done! _________________ 1951 M38 |

As Scott said, the rod is the link between the push button at the steering wheel and the horn's switch attached at the bottom of the steering gear. If you've got one, count yourself as a little lucky because most are missing by the time you get the jeep. They're not very expensive, but still, "one less thing to worry about". Installed mine a couple of weeks ago. _________________ - Dan

It keeps the oil from penetrating the switch. Midwest Military has the assy.
for $24.It's the easiest way to go. |

Sorry, I thought you talking about the inner tube that the actuating rod goes through. Mine was missing ,and oil was leaking through the switch. |

After looking at the drawing, I think I am talking about "QQ" on the drawing.
The fact that it comes out with oil on it a bad or normal thing? |
