In a concerted effort to better organize our data bases I would like to ask that every owner help a bit here. I need the following data on your jeep and detailed photos of the serial dash plate and the patent plate on the wheel house if available. You can email me at tomatotruck993@yahoo.com. Please include your name and email address.

There is a list of most Canadian postwar CFRs (Canadian Forces Registration) numbers with serial numbers on www.ramtank.ca. The M38A1 serial numbers are listed beside the sequential CFRs. The number format is YY-#####, ie 70-08876.
You won't get engine numbers, but the serial number and the licence plate number issued to those vehicles. Sometimes the details of a particular serial number are available under Access to Information for C$5.00. My M38A1 CDN3 08876 (SN 100002) is listed and described. |

Hello Terry and welcome to our web site. Thanks for offering the information source. Yes, I have visited that web site before. Our web site is entirely free so the arithmetic to pay $5 for jeep data doesn't fit well with us. We offer our data bases, manuals and etc free to all members.
I do find it very interesting that such detailed military records are kept and still available for the CDN units. The US units aren't so fortunate.
I send a model specific survey form to each member asking him/her to complete the survey on their jeep/jeeps and return it to me for inclusion in our data base.
We are a wee bit short on Canadian Forces manuals but we hope to have those loaded soon. We invite all our Canadian members with PDF copies or JPEG scanned copies to consider donating copies of them to our web site.
Thanks again and welcome aboard. _________________ Wes K

I have the M38 serial number 10675,original hood number 2365481,transmission date 12-50 front and rear diff.12-50.Engine ser number does not match in the 11000 range.Restored 20 years ago but sat out in the weather for about 10 years. When I got it the wiring harness for the lights was for the 2 connector light switch but the connectors were cut off.

Thanks Dallas.
So to the best of your knowledge the hood # 2365481 was original from the military service it was surplused from? What was your full engine serial? MC11XXX. There were what appears to be two 1950 contracts for spare engines that would have been several hundred so it stands to reason that an MC11XXX number would be very close to an original engine serial for a MC10675 jeep. _________________ Wes K

The hood number was over the original first coat of paint and also over the 2nd coat of 24087 paint. The last coat of paint was tan.Under the hood over the original first coat of paint was stencilled all fluid data, timing settings etc. I lost the note pad that I wrote the data on after my divorce.

I have layers and layers of paint on my M38 so I have no idea where the hood numbers would be located. I am a newbie, so I appreciate any help or information you could pass my way. |

should be on the sides of the hood just above the fender, on some repaints it could be up further on the curve of the hood.
use fine grit sand paper, step back and check it often. The paint is usually not very thick for the lettering. _________________ Ryan Miller

I have an M38A1cdn3 with two serial numbers one on the dash plate (100180), and one behind the passenger seat (7105014 100089). I have checked with ram tank.ca and both come up with cfr#s 100180 cfr 08956, 100089 cfr 08821. Engine number is MD140389(was found on rebuild tag). Under hood stencilled AF78779(don't know what that means)
Del date 6-71 contract 2MFO-0266 ord stock# 121301
I'm assuming the one behind seat is correct?
I hope this info helps

In the majority of cases where there is a mismatch of the Willys/Kaiser patent plate serial behind the passenger seat and the armed forces dash plate serial the tub was swapped to the original vehicle that had that dash plate by someone unfamiliar with the presence/location of the tub's patent plate. In these cases the safe assumption is that the dash serial is the original jeep's serial and the serial on the tub came with the tub when it was swapped onto the original jeep. _________________ Wes K

Thanks for the info Wes, I will be using the cfr # that matches with the ser no on the dash plate when I stencil it on the side. |
