I noticed that my two M38 pinion yokes are slightly different: one has what appears to be a small shield and the other does not. I understand that the rear service axle (ORD P/N 8677577) calls out a yoke with a shield (assy 8328005), but it looks like that would be a much larger shield (7375197). The base yoke p/n is the same (7348604).
So, logically, I suppose the small shielded yoke should go on the rear axle. But it was on my front... Did someone get my yokes switched in the past or was that correct?

The front axle faces the rear and is not exposed to high speed impact of dirt, stones and etc. The rear needs the greater protection. _________________ Wes K

That's what I figured. Apparently somebody in the past didn't do their figuring when the axles were pulled apart. _________________ 1952 M38 - restoration in process, 1000 miles away...
