This little 134 engine is new to me but two things are alarming. One is the push rods are loose, they move up and down about 1/4" depending on the current position of the crank. If I turn the crank clockwise, I hear this awful click-click-click noise. CCW I don't hear anything. Can't tell where it is coming from but I'm going to drop the pan. The engine was apparently rebuilt, when / how long ago is unknown. Trying to muddle my way through the TM9-1804A manual right now....
The engine has solid lifters and it calls for a clearance of .014 to .016 so that's the most movement you should get.
If you run across a civvy CJ service manual SM-1002 grab it. It is a lot easier to follow than the TM 9-1804A. _________________ Wes K

These are nowhere near that spec, I can fit a pencil between the spring and the rocker arm. The ball end of the arm comes right out of the push rod cup.
Pulled the head, pretty grim. Looks like a total rebuild. Block surface and cyliner walls are pitted in a couple places and found three frozen valves, rusty as all $&%.
Pulled the pan tonight. Gasket looked brand new and all the bearings had no wear. The inside of the engine looked cleaner than my 91 Comanche when I rebuilt it however the crankshaft needs machining and the oil was "watery" and smelled heavily of gasoline. Guess it will be a full rebuild. Pistons were marked .20 over so I'm sure it was rebuilt at one point or another.

Wes,
Is SM-1002 this manual that Turner's 4WD lists as "TSM-EARLY MB* 2A/3A/3B/CJ5/6 L&F HEAD JEEP SERVICE MANUAL" http://tinyurl.com/429fhvs? That page says it is "Officially Licensed Reprint Product From Mopar Reprinters" but doesn't give a number for it. I know you have mentioned Turner's as a source before, and this looks like the only manual there that comes close. Want to be sure before plunking down $50.
