We're beginning our fourth week of travelling the forest roads of the Targhee N. F. along the southern boundary of Yellowstone N.P. in the A1. This good old jeep has run flawlessly. We prepared over the winter for this "Summer Tour" by going through the bearings and ignition, replacing some very bad wiring behind the instrument panel, installing new batteries and battery hold downs and just generally giving the whole jeep the once over.
Next winter, the '63 CJ5 gets the same treatment. Next summer, we're bringing both.
We're taking pics and will put together a Summer Tour photo album when we're done.
Here's a pic of the A1 from about two weeks ago as we entered YNP at the Bechler Ranger Station in the southwest corner of the Park.

What a great idea. Looking forward to the trip report. How many days are you planning on for this trip? Have you actually been out there for the entire 4 weeks already? How much of the trip is camping and utilizing the park's many facilities? _________________ Wes K

I did the same idea ( on road ) in my '51 MGTD. It's the only way to have a true feeling of the area. Too bad a huge low pressure in Mid July caught me. Rained all night and snowed 6 inches on the pass from Moran Junction over to Dubois Idaho. No Heater. Stopped at the only mechanic in Yellowstone to borrow a allen wrench to take the windwings off and install the side curtains. The sign said " NO TOOLS LOANED " The guy liked my car-----Ha! It now has a heater. I also found out why there was a pendalton wool blanket in the back. These trips like yours are keepers! I envy you! John
Not travelling in YNP front country, all travel in Targhee NF. Staying in Ashton, Idaho. Go to Idaho PBS, see their show on "Cascade Corner", that's other name for Bechler region of YNP. Here's the link http://video.idahoptv.org/video/1476047808
More details later.
John,
A 1951 TD? Outstanding! I am original owner of 1971 MGBGT. Idaho British Car Club just finished our Summer Tour. See website. Go with us next year! _________________ 1953 M38A1 (His)

Wes,
Thanks for your comments and questions.
We are not spending any time in the main areas of the Park: Old Faithful, Lake, Canyon, Tower, Lamar, etc. We’ve been fortunate to visit those areas many times since our first trip to the Park in 1976.
Our intent is to spend as much time off pavement as we can. We’re actually spending 95% of our driving time on the gravel roads of the Targhee National Forest. No off road 4 wheeling, just great scenery at a leisurely pace. The Targhee borders the area of YNP known as the Bechler region or Cascade Corner. It is a remote, seldom visited and absolutely beautiful area of the Park.
Our home base is Ashton, Idaho. Ashton is a great little farming and recreational town. The boundaries of Yellowstone and Teton National Parks can both be reached from there on Targhee N.F. roads. No overnight camping, we stay in a travel trailer in the local RV park.
Not sure what the final tally of actual travel days will be. Our goal was at least 21 days. But life keeps distracting us! In the 3 weeks we’ve been here so far, we’ve been on the roads in the A1 10 days. _________________ 1953 M38A1 (His)
