Dave, here is the correct engine mount plate. I Just want to make sure you have the correct one now. This came off an M38.

Finally pulled the timing cover and timing gear off. Now I have to pull the oil pan and scrape off the gasket. What a pain. Oh well, you live and learn. |

After a few months of procrastinating, I got the correct front engine plate on and the engine is timed right. See the pictures below for a comparison of the civvy and military front engine plates. The green plate is the CJ plate and the primer red is the military M38 & M38A1. I had to scrape the gasket remnants off the oil pan and block. Hopefully I can get the oil pan back on tomorrow.

I hate moving backwards. Here's a shot of my engine minus the front plate and timing gear.
I pulled the engine so I wouldn't have to crawl under the Jeep to remove the oil pan and scrape the gasket remnants off. Here's a couple of good shots of the master cylinder area. It shows a good mix of original and reproduction parts. The brake lines and horn wiring are reproductions from MWM. The master cylinder heat shield is a CJ2A reproduction from the CJ2A page. The master cylinder is an original Wagner and the brake light switch is NOS. The master cylinder is probably not military surplus but it's made in the USA, maybe a CJ replacement part.

I feel your pain Dave. I'm seeing some leaks now and I hope I don't have to pull the trans. At least the parts are clean and organized so you don't have to go through that step. _________________ '53 M38A1 X2 |

Back on track with a fresh coat of paint on my engine. Now I just need to wipe off the dust and start moving forward again.

Been thinking about my gauge panel lately. My transfer case is a civvy unit and I wanted to use the correct military speedo and cable. Fortunately I have a couple of spare military transfer cases. I removed the speedo drive gear and sleeve from the civvy unit and replaced it with the military version. The correct M38 gear and sleeve is the one on the left.

Thanks Wes. That's good information. That tells me that the AC is correct for my M38 and the Warner is correct for the M38A1 that I will be building. |
