What is the difference if any, between a A1 and aM38 spare tire carrier? Will they inter change,or are they model specific?
Thanks DJ

DJ,
The spare tire carrier should interchange betweent the M38 and M38A1.
If I remember the main difference is that the M38 is a two piece bolted together and the M38A1 is a one piece welded unit.
Many of the M38 units were welded or modified due to the original bracket as delivered had some problems unless welded or a brace added after extended use. _________________ Ryan Miller

They are completely different. Being as I manufacture the A1 Carrier, I can tell you this. They may interchange, but they are made quite differently. Regards, John

Is there suppose to be a reflector on the spare tire carrier? I noticed that neither of the photos had one but I've seen pictures of vehicles with one mounted central to the rim center hole. _________________ Sal Fanelli

If you have an early style M38A1 jeep you are restoring, the M38 spare tire holder would probably be more accurate. I have only seen the reinforced tire holder on later production M38A1's.
In the picture Wes provided of the M38 tire holder the joint were the top square section meets the bottom triangular section is a series of short arc welds. This seam over time tends to pull apart, from backing into something or road shock, causing the tire to tilt forward, sag or be crooked.
The solution was to add the strips of angle iron to the design as
reinforcement. And, it worked. |

There is a lens bracket that fits between the spare tire bracket studs that when the spare tire is mounted on to the bracket, the reflector shows up in the wheel rim center.
I get a picture and post it later today. _________________ Ryan Miller

Here is a photo of the spare tire reflector bracket on the right side of the photo.

Now reloaded. I´m missing the photos from wesk. I´m asking because a guy sold me a spare tire holder and I´m not sure is he wrong or right for my M38 and how do I have to fix him on my M38 if it´s a M38A1 holder...
This one I have and at the moment I don´t have any holes in my tailgate...
