My son is a Weblo and the annual pinewood derby is coming up in a few weeks. He's been helping me with the M38 restoration and wants to model his derby car after it. I've seen a few "army Jeep" cars on line but nothing that really says M38! I'm hoping you guys have some ideas or suggestions for us. Remember...he's got to work on this too.

When my son was in Cub Scouts we had a couple of races, the most important of course was the one for the Cubs... then we had one for the sisters, and one for the guys that had left the pack and moved on to Boy Scouts, and the one that >> I << liked best, the one for the Dads.

In THAT one, we could do the fancy cars that didn't necessarily have to meet all the weight standards. That would be the race that you could really do up a military OD jeep and race it!

But just remember the main lesson in this contest that you have to pass on is the lesson on how to loose. Every boy except for ONE will loose. That is the real lesson. So, be a good example. And let him do all his work on his car. Work on yours together with him.

Good advice. He built his own car last year with very little help from me. I basically supervised and made the tough cuts. He came in third. It was a great day!

I was hoping for some design or plan ideas, keeping in mind that he will be doing most of the work.

I remember a while back I was looking at some old late 1940's or early 1950;s Popular Science magazine archives online and came across an article of two very good scale Willys peddle and or push jeep blueprint how to build out of ply wood and lumber looked pretty simple to do.I hope this helps to find what you are looking for. scroll down to page 162 of this archive link.

Thanks hill ! That might actually work. A little scale reduction and I think we can work that out.

don't forget to add weight holes to add weight when you get there... no matter what, cars always seem to come in under weight...
