My 55 M38A1 is having starting issues. When it starts it runs great. Perfect, no miss and accelerates fine. I can cut the engine off and it will start with no problems at all if I immediately start it after I turn it off. But If I come back about an hour later it will not start, wont even hit! I have adjusted the points and spark plugs. It has new spark plug wires and a newly rebuilt carb. The spark plugs are firing and it is getting gas to the carb. Any suggestions? _________________ 1955 M38A1
No start an hour after parking is usually a result of the heat soaking which if you have a weak coil will heat the coil to the point it won't play. Also if your coolant temp was high while it was running it can then heat soak enough to boil the gas out of the carb bowl.
When you say the plugs are firing are you implying they are firing at the same time that engine will not start or are you saying they fire later on when it cools down?
Are the engine compressions up in the normal range? If not they will often not create enough vacuum to draw the needed initial flow of gas through the vacuum operated metering system or the vacuum operated accelerator pump system. _________________ Wes K

The Jeep started this morning, came back about 2 hours later and it will not start. I put a new coil in it so I don't thimk that is the problem. You mentioned compression, what range should each cylinder be within? Or can you think of any other reasons why it would be so hard to start? It has always started easy until I started adjusting the points to get the horrible miss out of the engine. But as I said, when it starts the jeep runs great- as a matter of fact its the best that it has ever ran....smooth no misses and accelerates great and will even start back if I start it as soon as I cut it off. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!!! _________________ 1955 M38A1

Just might sound silly but after you check the info Wes gave you also check your ignition switch. I was having problems with my jeep and thought it was the coil. Turned out that my ignition switch was the issue.
