I purchased a new jeep. And am confused by thr data plates. It says M38A1 but has a serial CJ2A 63286 date 10/46. I'll add pics later. I was wondering if it was a military or civilian model

Hello Chad. You'll need to get some photos up or explain in greater detail.

This is an M38 dash.

This is an M38A1 dash

They both use a set of data plates like this.

Here is a website with a comprehensive history of Jeep models. Take a look and see if you can spot your Jeep. You can click on each photo for more info. Dash tags and ID plates get changed around on old jeeps for various reasons, they may not be accurate.

Here's Chad's photos.

This is a 1946 Civilian CJ2A jeep.

This is a surplus set of blank data plates for a M38A1 that some civilian owner picked up and stamped with his CJ2A serial number.

To attach a photo to your post you must first have it loaded to a photo hosting web site. You cannot load a photo to a post here directly from your computer. We have a photo album page where you can open an album and upload your photos. Once your photos are in the online album you can link them to a post.

To link a photo's URL to a post you click on the [img] icon at the top of the dialog box (the box you are typing your post in). When the [img] appears in your post just paste the URL for your photo immediately after it and then click the [img*] icon at the top of the dialog box and a [/img] will appear at the end of your URL.

That's all there is to it.

Chad, I opened an album for you in our photo album section:

The CJ2A folks have an excellent web site at:
