perhaps some of you guys with more experience than I can help me.
1953 m38a1 which has sat for several years. The gentleman who was restoring it passed away before finishing and I acquired it many years later.
Cranks up and runs but has no oil pressure. If I rev it up a little it will have no more than 20 psi as soon as I let it idle down pressure drops to 0 psi.
This pressure is being read off an straight pressure gauge not the dash gauge. I also tapped in another pressure gauge on the top back of the head where the external oil line runs to the rocker arm assembly. I only register 1 or 2 psi there when I rev the motor up some and zero at idle.
I was hoping it was only the oil pump but I installed a brand new NOS pump and no change.
For my next move I am considering rolling in new main and rod bearings.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Has anyone out there had any success doing this? I am trying to avoid a complete overhaul at this time as I am in the middle of building a new house and must be out of my current house in about six weeks and will not have a shop completed to work in for at least six months. Once again any suggestions will be appreciated .
Wes, no noise at all, motor sounds good no knocks ,no fuel in the gas no coolant in the gas.
This motor sat up for several years , I primed the pump by immersing it in oil and rotating it till no air was left . I did not prime the block the way I have since read about on other posts but I can get up to 20 psi when the motor is revved up some.
I would be afraid to run it like this if it didn't sound so good. But I cant do this much longer....
compression is 90 psi cold in each cylinder I havn't been able to run it long enough to get a good warmed up compression reading.
The fellow who had this jeep before me passed away so I have no way of knowing whats been done to it but the rest of the work appears to be well done. _________________ 1953 M38a1

Wesk ,
I really appreciated your help on my oil pressure problem.
I have a question for you, what size orifice is in the timing gear cover?
Mine may have been jerry rigged,I have a copper line with brass fittings running from my oil filter out port to my timing gear cover and I'm thinking the orifice may have been replaced.I have a brass fitting that looks like it was brazed onto the cover.
I measured the opening in the fitting going into the timing cover and it measures 11/64. Is this way too large?
I have acquired the correct flexible oil line and the threads don't fit the fitting on the timing cover.
Could this oversized orifice be the cause of my lack of oil pressure?
thanks _________________ 1953 M38a1

When troubleshooting oil pressure issues one should have a solid understanding of the hydraulic principals involved and the layout of the Willys 134 oil system.
Rather than throw an essay on this system at you I'll just condense it into where pressure can be lost in the system.
Thanks for the insight wes
Im gonna pull the timing cover off and rule outany problems with the gear spray jet and then drop the pan to inspect the gallery plugs
I read an old post that had the same symptoms and he found his spray jet was not installed.
i have alreadt ruled out the pump and the relief valve.
the filter and canister are correct.
Hopefully its not bearings or the lifter spaces.
Thanks for the help
the name is brian but am called heywood locally _________________ 1953 M38a1

You can go to your profile and load your preferred first name or nickname in the same place you listed your vehicles which show up at the bottom of all your posts. _________________ Wes K

Wes,
I dropped the pan to check the gallery plugs and plastigauge the main and rod bearings . I found the pick-up screen plugged with small trash and a postage stamp size piece of gasket.
I think this is probably my problem .
Ill put it all back together and let you know.
Thanks for your help. _________________ 1953 M38a1

Wesk,
an update ,I cranked it up today and had about 10/12 psi oil pressure at idle and 40 psi when revved up a little,so its much better.
I'm taking the reading with a gauge tapped into the same line that goes to the electric O/P gauge. I also tapped in a gauge on the head ,in the plug near where the external oil line goes to the rocker arms.at that point I'm only reading 1 or 2 psi of oil pressure. I s this normal or should I have more pressure at this point?
Are there any other points I should worry about checking?
Once again thanks for all your help and advice _________________ 1953 M38a1
