That this guy on eBay is selling a "50R PTO winch" for almost $5,000. The winch looks like a 50R, but the PTO is definitely not. I think the buyer is going to not know why it doesn't fit his vehicle. _________________ 1952 M38A1

Nothing "funny": going on here. I know this fellow. He is honest and is not trying to fool anyone. If you are going to make any purchase, you should look the ad over real good. There is no ill intent here! As you all know, the Ramsey 50 winch and set up is very hard to find, he is merely giving someone an option. I can't vouch that this setup will fit, but, I can tell you he took many measurements from my originally winch equipped M38 and brackets. Hopefully it works for someone.

If nothing funny is going on then why is the title "COMPLETE SETUP M38 M38A1 RAMSEY 50 50R WINCH 105 105A PTO WILLYS JEEP CJ" No where in the ad does he say what model winch it is. Also you have to read very carefully to see where it even says it is not a 5o or a 50r. He is hoping some unexpecting person sees it is tilted as a 50 and buys it as that price. No ramsey 200 setup is worth what he is asking. It is dishonest no matter how you look at it.

And it wonted fit without extensively modifying the tailpipe. I had to do that with my Ramsey 200L PTO winch, which looks almost exactly like this one. It threw me at first, because I looked at it with the 50R title on it. _________________ 1952 M38A1

OK now I see the referenced ad. Yes the ad is extremely misleading but it does meet the Ebay rules. It would have been much more open and truthful and not misleading had the poster actually described his winch offering accurately. For the M38 "It is a cut down 200 civvy winch modified in length to fit the M38 stock style repro mounting brackets using a Ramsey civvy PT1J PTO, custom driveshafts, custom U joints and a repro clutch handle. " Instead they are using a very confusing combination of descriptive terms that all too often say 50 or 50R and 105. Yes, if a cautious buyer reads through the 20 paragraphs of repetitive commercial sales comments, they should be able to discern the true nature of the offered product, but in this hobby there is no reason for any vendor to bury the truth that deep.

Winch gearing: Cable is top spooled- To pull the jeep forward- transfer case is in neutral / disengaged (meaning the wheel are free rolling), transmission needs to be in reverse gear.
Model PT1-J, dual PTO -front & rear output.
Dual output allows for operation of both a front & rear winch or other implements/attachments off this one PTO.

Driveshaft & Universal Joint Assemblies
New ¾” diameter drive shaft for between the winch and PTO.
Just cut to length to fit your application (up to 64”). 3/16” keyway is down the entire length of the shaft.
THREE New ¾” universal joint assemblies (6 yokes, 3 universal joints, 6 keyways, and 6 set screws) These are high quality manufacturer to Spicer specifications, aftermarket parts made in Germany. Also on order and may ship separately.
Note that some vehicles configurations may call for an additional universal joint assembly & short shaft (use cut off piece) to work around specific obstacles (engine components, exhaust, mounting angle, etc). Three included should you need it.
Unpainted shaft and universal joints- as you need to cut to size.
Please note that with any specialty equipment- expect that modifications may be needed to obtain a proper fit to your specific vehicle.
We have found over the years that so many vehicles have had the front end modified one way or the other. This is why we offer the longer driveshaft option and optional mounting bracket kits.
Pulling Gear
New chain- over 5 feet long (65"- to save cable from getting crimped, wrap around a tree, or other vehicle).
New 3/8" chain hook (grab type- included) or slip /open hook style (shown below- specify).
New cable loop- 3/8"
New cable clamps (2)- 3/8" (included) or Safe-line type (shown below- specify), on order and may ship separately.
Just buy your new 3/8" cable and you are good to go.
All hardware is included as follows: key stock and set screws, winch to mount bolts and washers, fairlead to mount bolts, nuts, and washers.
You will need: PTO to transfer case bolts (5), use the ones from the removal of the transfer case PTO access cover, PTO to body floor boot and retaining frame, etc. Drive shaft hanger bearing/ pillow block. Please contact us for your needs we probably have it!
Everything shown is ready to ship with in 7 days, unless noted. Expect a ship date of up to 45 - 60 days after purchase (possibly much sooner) if a different setup or if a M38A1 winch bracket is requested.

Dan, I have to agree there's a lot of BS and misleading statements in that Ad.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that someone is tooling up and producing a "Looks close & Good" kit for the M38 owners that can't find a 50/50R-105 setup but why not just advertise what you are selling on it's own merits and save the misleading BS that infers it is something it is not.
A simple Ad title " Customized Ramsey civilian 200 series winch package that will fit the military M38/M38A1" would suffice. After posting dozens of related photos why even introduce a bunch of unrelated photos that are not germain to the issue. In the end his sales success will likely be the same. _________________ Wes K

Like everything a person buys, it is always buyer beware. This guy wouldn't be the first to doll up a title to get attention. I agree, it has big descriptions and somewhat misguided drivel included. But, if you are going to spend over $4000 I would sure hope that you would look over the ad really good. If not, well, I guess the buyer would have a lot more money than I do! As I stated earlier, I know this fellow and he is honest and I don't think he intends to hoodwink anyone.

Probably un-intentional but looks like he's in the middle of starting up his winch business and this would be a good time to seek some professional or experienced sales & marketing training. Initial perceptions and impressions can make or break a new business.

I didn't post a link because I wasn't sure of all the liability involved. I remember I got quite alot of drama when I mentioned by name who sold me my M38A1. They told me it was "like it just rolled out of the factory" and I ended up having to do a frame off restoration. Even the supposedly rebuilt engine was rebuilt wrong.
I looked up who this guy is, and I have talked to him on the phone. He is a decent guy, and he makes mock up M38 and M38A1 mounts for civilian PTO units. This isn't his main job, he does it on the side. _________________ 1952 M38A1
