A friend went to a lot of trouble to find a correct (and hard to find) M38A1 fuel sending unit. It didn't fit: the float rod slammed up against the wall of his tank: his brand new repro tank. Someone forgot to mention that they (I assume MD Juan) realigned the mounting flange to accept the commonly reproduced M151 fuel sending unit which of course would have to be completely reworked for length of main shaft and length of float rod for the geometry to work.
Any more repro horror stories? ........ Brian |

Same here - long rant will come up with a quick search. We post on here to keep people from making the same mistakes that we did. I hate to be the one to say it, because I hate to hear it myself - SEARCH and research. It has all been covered here many times before. _________________ Matt

I agree. There sure are a lot of junk repro parts out there. I'm in the process of cleaning up My flywheel. When I was installing the new pilot bushing it fell right on through the flywheel. I compared it to an older used one and the older one had both a larger outside diameter and a lot better fit on the transmission shaft. Yes - I know I ordered the correct one for my jeep. I guess quality control doesn't exist anymore. |

Same for omix spring bushings - fall right through the spring instead of press fit. _________________ Matt

Here's a good one: a commonly available repro M38A1 carburator kit has the tiny hole for the pin that holds the metering rod into the diaphragm drilled vertically instead of horizontally(as original). This means that it is very easy to lose the pin as you install the metering rod and diaphragm into the side of the carburator. Not such a big problem if the carb is one the bench but very annoying if you are working on the carb while it is installed. .......... Brian |

I'm pretty sure it is one of the overseas repro kits (prob Omix) like the ones sold on eBay for half the price of the dealer kits. They are half price because they are "factory seconds". Any idea where Midwest's and Ron's kits manufactured Wes? _________________ Matt

Regarding the carburator kit with the different metering jet pin orientation, I did not specify the brand because it comes from a generally reliable wholesaler and otherwise these kits have worked well for me. The orientation of the hole can be annoying but not critical to the functioning of the kit.

Another issue: most of the currently available points capacitors have a removable fastening band - probably to make them more universal. The OEM capacitor has a small welded mounting tab; makes for a very easy installation. I'm glad I had the distributor on the bench when I tried to install the current style with the removable band since it was a struggle to fit it into place. ....... Brian |

I took that barely used offshore waterpump to the IMVPA
rally last weekend and I swear, no kidding, I couldnt GIVE IT AWAY!!
