I recently picked up a fairly clean M38A1-C Jeep with no data tags. None on the dash, passenger side wheelwell, or rear. The only identification I have uncovered at this point is the engine serial number MD 33153 and a Overhaul tag on the top of the fuel pump that reads overhauled at POFL date A9 64.
I believe the Jeep is a 52 or 53 based on the hinged grill, thumbscrews on battery cover, drain holed centered on the floor board and lack of radiator supports.
Is there a way to cross reference the engine number, assuming it is the stock engine, with the serial number or hood number?

No. Willys did not match them. Near the beginning of each contracts production run they would be fairly close but no attempt was made at Willys to match engine serial to chassis serial.
M38A1C's were modified M38A1's accomplished in the field at Army Depots.
If your suspect A1C has all the A1C traits including the holes for the odd data plates then it is an A1C however you will never be able to nail down a serial.
Review my sub-photo album which includes the modification directions:
