Which axle (front or rear) and which model axle (23-2 or 25 or 27 or 41 or 44)?

Have you read TM 9-8014 Start with Para 215 page 259 and read thru Para 221 page 264. The entire process is laid out on those 5 pages.

I read it. It says to use a suitable puller. What does a suitable puller for this application look like?

A suitable puller to remove the axle from the housing either a slide hammer or striker type hub puller to get the hub off and to get the axle out.

Once you have the hub & drum off and remove the back plate items to access the bearing then you may need the slide hammer to jar the axle/bearing assembly loose to remove the axle. The slide hammer may also be needed to pop the bearing race out of the axle tube.

The bearing inner race is an interference fit on the axle and will often require the use of a hydraulic press to separate them.

Just a wee bit more reading. If you look at the main index page you will notice a discussion board titled:

Thanks for your help. I'm putting the axle back together now. Well my dad is. I have another question. When installing the axle bearing and race. Do you drive the race all the way in? He said he did and couldn't move the axle shaft at all. What are we doing wrong? How do the shims set the .001 to .006" axle end play? Do they set the race depth?

Driving the race fully into the well is a NO NO. If you had placed the M38A1 TM 9-8014 on the table next to the jeep and read the steps for the axle installation one step at a time you would have never driven that race in all the way. . With that said I suggest you immediately remove the axle , bearing and race and start over on page 260 of TM 9-8014 Para c. installation. Follow the steps c. (1) thru c. (11) one step at a time in the given order.

Keep in mind the manual assumes when you took it apart you kept the original shims for each side and marked them for which side they went back on. If you failed to do this then you have a much bigger job ahead of you.

Nah,
Just not taking the short cut.

Getting the full meal deal on axle rebuilding.

Like my jeep. "I'll just pull the bellhousing, tranny and transfer to get at
the throwout bearing."

"Ahhhh, Man, why are there metal particles in my tranny oil?"

It'll work out. Be patient and do it right. You will learn a lot
and not be disappointed in the long run.

OK, I got the bearings shimmed to .006 endplay. When I installed the hub, the 1" castle nut would only screw on far enough to get the cotter pin through the shaft. No room for the big washer on driver side. Passenger side, no problem. What did I do wrong? What do I need to do? Thanks in advance.

Did you install the hubs over the key or the did you install the key into the hub/axle after you installed the hub?

I think the hub was installed first, then the key.
