why is old od paint so hard, i have tryed paint stripper, wire brush,chisel. is the new paint as tough or is the old paint just aged and got hard with age;

Here is the way I look at it. If you want the paint to come off, it won't. However, if you don't want it to, it will chip off easily. Just my observations. Smile

got that right, i was wandrin if the new paint would be hard like the old paint. maybe in 25 years.

Just from my experience with my M38A1, which had 10 year old paint on it, no. The jeep had decals on it and when I peeled them off hunks of paint came with it. And it had been painted with Gillespie USMC Semi-Gloss. I think most of the hard paint is just build up from being painted again and again because there were spot were the paint was hard but there was other paint under that. Could the older paint have been lead based? Would that make the difference?

The old OD paint contains lead & a hardener . . . . I went through 1200 lbs. of sand when I blasted my M38 tub . . .
