|
|
So a while back I ordered the grill welting and rivets and then put it aside. Now it is time to install it so I started in the middle and was working my way outwards when I soon found out the outer rivets needed to be longer than the middle ones, yet all of the ones in the package I bought are the same length. Does anyone know where these can be purchased locally (hardware/ big box stores) or does anyone have about 8 that I can buy?
The ones I have are 3/8" long and it appears that I need 1/2" long ones.
Thanks,

Hi Kendall,
I'm pretty sure I've seen them in the Hillman bins at my local Ace Hardware Store. I can go look and check my memory. You're looking for 1/2-inch length......what diameter? _________________ Ron D.

Thanks Ron. I just checked one of our local hardware stores and no split rivets. These are 1/8" diameter. _________________ 1951 M38

Ok, 1/8 x 1/2 long. I'll stop by tomorrow and hopefully confirm my memory. Standby..... _________________ Ron D.

This is for one of my M38s (but it does not seem to make a difference for this part between the two models). I'm thinking 7/16 would be a bit shy to go through the material and two layers of steel, but that is what the manual says. But Ron I am still thinking 1/8"X1/2" would be fine. Thanks for checking.

Hi Kendall,
Yes, my local Ace Hardware has Hillman 1/8x1/2 steel split rivets, but pretty pricey at .40 cents each, plus 7% sales tax. Cost for 8 would be $3.45 plus postage, guessing another $4 for that.
As mentioned above, you could buy a lifetime supply for not much more than that ---- and then we could ask you to buy some!
Let me know if you want me to put some in the mail. Glad to help. _________________ Ron D.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for your effort. This is what I learned from this exercise- not all hardware stores are the same. After going to my local Ace Hardware and not finding split rivets I posted the plea. Ron said his local hardware store had them, so today I called another (Ace) hardware store in town. No luck. I then looked online and found several Ace Hardware stores in town and one True Value Hardware store. So I called them, and sure enough they had want I needed. So went there after work and bought what I needed. So next time I need some hardware and Ace doesn't have it, always try True Value.

Glad you found them!
I'm fortunate to have an Ace about 1/2 mile away, a newer store, maybe 10 years old. Their Hillman bins are pretty good, but for really hard-to-find obscure stuff I go to the 50 year old Ace in the next town over. Old school hardware store. Cracks me up that I can stump most of their young employees when looking for really hard-to-find stuff. _________________ Ron D.
