South Carolina is exempt if it didn't come from the factory with them. I keep a copy of the paragraph of the motor vehicle code with my registration for the rookie deputy who stops me (not like that'll help any, but makes me feel better).

I do have them in mine, eyelets on the floor and OD green old-school belts with hooks on them. I keep them stowed most of the time in the glove box. Law says if they're there they have to be used, and rolled up in the glove box isn't there. Big debate about it for vintage jeeps. Roll-over? Hard collision? Might be better off thrown clear. Might not.

I wish us all much luck in that department!


Exempt... however- I am not fond of biting a dashboard. I don't want to give the government a reason to not pay my folks my 400K life insurance policy.

Have to get around that non-collapsing spear of a steering column before the dash would get into the dental work?

I understand your point however about government insurance (since when did they need an excuse not to do something?) Laughing

Hi April,
I just caught your Sunday youtube. Nice! How about a helmet-cam so you can work with both hands? Very Happy

You said you're ditching your windshield wipers (not sure you said replace them). I mention this because if Virginia is like SC, the inspector who signed off on mine for title and registration had to see wipers and horn, no exemption (M38 had them from the factory, apparently all vehicles do). Nice thing about M38 wipers is the manual operating handles --- that's all she needed to see them work.

I have turn signals on mine (none on M38 so technically exempt). But because I have them I had to show they work.

I have purchased the last of the items I need for exterior body like blackout light, the door rope channels, all the seats, fuel tank, lifting brackets and Shackles, and even bought a hood drip rail thing that goes under the hood hinge (previous owner made one of aluminum that did okay but not the best)

I have 2 gallons of my navy grey lusterless paint... plenty of primer, body filler for the real needed areas and seam sealer for all the things.

I will work on welding up some more fender holes, the hole in the firewall near the cowl battery box and a few pin holes in the floor boards that I missed.

Once all welding is done, with a few days off in good weather, I will get to the body work portion, but it will not be 100% straight. I will leave it as a driver and not worry about the things that are going to eat my lunch.

I am building a driver.

Here's to take a few days off work which has been a bear lately.

Found a jerry can dated 1952. It says 20 5 52 on the bottom.
Inside there is just a slight rust, but nothing like I would suspect.



It was stupid hot out and I should probably have waited, but I used 40 grit, sanded the areas I think needed some short strand and started applying.


I am not going to make this body super straight because I’d never drive it then. A few dents will be fine.

Still needed to sand more.

Back in a little red oxide.



More parts await.

You project is looking good. You mentioned in a previous post a "hood drip rail thing that goes under the hood hinge".
I confess my ignorance. What does it look like and can you post a picture of it and where it goes on the hood hinge.

I think it's the bottom long piece in the photo above, directly above the rear lifting shackle brackets. Don't have one myself. I heard they don't work so good.

RG,

I did a wee bit of research and found none of my photo collections shows any hood hinge drip rails and the ORD 9 does not show one under the Hood or tub. Found nothing about it in the TBO's, MWO's and etc either.

Must be a aftermarket, civvy or bubba thingy.

Thanks Wes, I had looked in the ord9 and couldn't find anything. I am like you, I wonder if it was a cj thing or maybe a MB or GPW before the water Proof plug wires.

Yes it is a city aftermarket thing. I originally saw it on debellas page. The previous owner had an aluminum plate riveted to the cowl for this purpose of keeping water off the cylinder head.



Pouring rain, thunder and lightning straight on top of us this afternoon.
Originally this morning I had plans to do fenders, but I quickly took Kaiser to petco for a nail trim when at 0415 this morning he stepped on my face and scratched my eyelid. He had to pee so I’m not mad, but it took an hour of my morning.
Ran to Harbor freight for an electric orbital sander. While I was there, I got a call from my elderly friend who had a misfire on her 2000 dodge Dakota daily driver. It was a “feel like 106*” and I’m changing plugs and wires on the old truck with 228k miles. Found oil on plug #4 and #5 was worse. She knows it’s not going to last long.

As soon as all that was done, the rain started, I decided to work on the D18 but realized I forgot to order an output gear.


The zirc looks crusty. Wonder if it will work.



Pumped it with some grease- it was fine.



I even cleaned the reserve fuel container - Jerry Can out, derust, dried out and used Red Kote inside it, sure smelled good like cancer causing agents.

The red kote did awesome and is already dry.

I bought one of those drip rails also for my driver.

Haven’t figured out how it’s going to work with the fording cable bracket…

Storm yesterday took my HF sun shade down. The rain was too much and toppled it. I had the legs tied down cause I’ve had one go fly over the back fence in our summer pop up storms last year. I had to get a cut off wheel and chop this up. Saved the canopy cover for quick tarping .





It was so much from yesterdays storm the ground was still soft. I guess by about 10am, I started digging rust out of the windshield inside frame, and also the under side of the fenders. I got what I could with wire brushes, wire wheels and disks. Ospho is working on the rust.


I need to sand more on the inner fenders. That paint is so hard to get off. The yellow and blue paint will flake off, that’s why I am trying to get it off. I can scuff the green pretty good and respray my grey lusterless on that. Just that yellow and blue is bad.



I am glad I went back outside after dinner and used that sunshade to tarp my fenders and windshield. Another nasty storm just rolled in. Weather report said 0% change of precipitation for a few more hours.

I have a 26 tooth output gear that's in decent shape, if I recall it has some small rust spots on the teeth. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and if you want it, it's yours.

Jumping in late on the under hood drip rail: I got one last year and tried to install it earlier this Spring. I couldn't install it without taking the hood off. When I went to reinstall it didn't fit right. I've decided to leave it off in the end....
Knowing, from Wes's research, that they aren't an original issue item is great. Given that the jeep was designed to be able to submerge, who cares about the drip rail?! Smile
I think it's an interesting item to add on but given how my jeep's tweaked it didn't fit and work.
