Out of curiosity, when the t90 is stationary, should I be able to shift it into 2nd or 3rd?

Why I ask is I can go R and (1st, but can’t go to 2 or 3.

I checked my shift forks are correct.

Brand new components.

I don’t want to go installing it, get it driving and find out the bind won’t go away with actual movement. Better to take apart now again instead of later I suppose.

Your thoughts?

Can you shift from reverse straight to 2nd or 3rd? Can you spin the unit by hand to try shifting with the guts in a different place?

After rebuilding mine, I can tell you that I can shift between 2nd and 3rd on the bench. It was very tight the first few times I did it, but slowly rotating the input shaft while keeping gentle pressure on the shift lever eventually let it drop into each gear. After a few times of shifting between all the gears, I definitely felt the 2nd and 3rd shifts get easier. I believe it has to do with the new retainer springs for the pawls in the syncro hub, my springs were very stiff during assembly and I even considered reusing the old ones because they were still in good shape and flexible. During a practice assembly, I did actually install the old syncro springs and the assembly of the input shaft to the main shaft seemed easier than the final assembly with the new springs.

what I figured.

No I can not go from reverse to second.
I can only shift it 1st and reverse.

I did try turning the shaft while attempting to shift, but it didn't go= but then again my leverage is off due to it being on the ground and not stable/bolted down.

I will try again.

No you can't shift transmissions normally unless they are spinning.
It's normal.

did nothing since the last time I tried this.... Tried again today... Shifted no problem with a slight movement of the shaft.

I have no idea. I had previously tried to do this with the shaft moving and it wouldn't budge.

Embarassed

No worries. Somewhat common ocurence to me with an inert manual transmission that's meant to be spinning to shift.
My 2003 Tacoma 4WD sometimes balks, usually going into reverse when parked --- engage and disengage the clutch once or twice moves the offending gear just enough to get them to mesh.
Same experience I've had with heavy truck 15-speed transmissions.

Driving a manual transmission is getting to be a lost art I think.
And a very good anti-theft device nowadays.
I read somewhere that only about 10% of cars have one, even less that know how to drive one.

And only 2nd and 3rd gears on the T90 are synchronized (kind of)....... Very Happy

Until I got the bronco, 3 of 4 of my vehicles had manuals.
I taught myself on my first truck in 99.
