Wrong Jeeps aside...there is an M38A1 in there too, and too new aircraft..the Grumman Albatross, and if one wants to get super picky, the later model PBJ-1J instead of the correct PBJ-1C/D....still, it's one of my favorite war films just on the strength of the lead actors.
The scenes with the Mutts and M38 were shot in Hawaii using real military gear
The scenes shot in Hollywood use MB/GPWs. Note the scene with Kirk Douglas in the rain.
If you were The producer would you really want to rent a PBY, paint it and fly it to Hawaii for a very short scene when you could get a Navy Albatross for free?
Face it, only a few airplane guys like me will know the difference.
Likewise with too new M38A1s and M-151s.
I can recommend the novel on which it is based. It was written by a LA newspaper publisher who served on Admiral Halsey's staff in WWII.
So, I take his views on staff politics seriously.
The book is on Kindle for just a few dollars, well worth it. _________________ 1955 M38A1 MD 82551

IF you are looking for very good war movies lately, I highly recommend the forgotten battle, operation mincemeat, 1917, and dunkirk just to name a few.
