Which parts are you referring to, the gauges or sending unit?
Read my comments carefully. You referred to two particular part numbers by their numbers. I referred to the same two particular parts by their number. In both references and in my copy of the parts manual we both referred to the same two senders. _________________ Wes K

It would be relatively simple in my opinion to remove the sender from the tank, and using clip leads, hook it to the sending wire and ground the housing to the frame somewhere. Now run the float up and down in both directions and watch the gauge.
If the gauge works then it it an installation issue with the sender.

I agree Brian (there must be an echo in here).
Kendall and I suggested that 20-minute job to pull the sender a few posts ago.
It seems as if JB isn't much interested in doing his own troubleshooting.
He admits being a pessimist and would rather buy parts. _________________ Ron D.

I'm not much of a mechanic, particularly when it comes to electrical issues...so sue me!
We did check it out. Old unit was grounded and installed correctly.
Tested old unit with two original (not repro) gauges I own as well as a few others in the shop.
One didn't work, the other...the gauge I'm currently using gave a partial indication. Which is what it has been doing.
So, I have asked a well known parts seller/restorer if the part he sells (and has correct right part number) has the correct resistance.
If it does, it [/i]Should work. _________________ 1955 M38A1 MD 82551

The only thing missing from your post is the VOM readings you should have taken of the sender with your VOM's Ohm Meter function. _________________ Wes K

Regardless of the readings, my focus is to resolve the issue and get a unit that dies communicate with my gauges.
Any sources of good products would be welcome. _________________ 1955 M38A1 MD 82551

Nobody is going to sue.
We're just trying to understand why you won't take resistance measurements on a partially working gauge and sender combination to compare with something you're going to ask a vendor if he has one with the "correct" resistance?
Are you going to ask the vendor to use his ohmmeter, or just trust him?
Do you see any holes in that approach?
Until you use the ohmmeter, everything will be a guessing game parts swapping drill.
Hopefully you'll eventually get lucky with the possible variable combinations. _________________ Ron D.

Does this mean you do not care to share your readings with us? or Does this mean you do not plan on taking readings? _________________ Wes K
