Does anyone know what the two clips on the back side of the 1950 M38 dash pannel are for?I don't know how to post a picture of it.[/img] |

Not exactly sure what clips you're asking about, but guessing you mean the early M38 panel that has the circuit breaker mounted on one side and a wire management clamp mounted on the other side (both eliminated on the later panel).
Page 83 of the M38 Reference Guide (book) has a photo and if it helps, here's a link to a photo in Wes' photo album showing them:

If you have a copy of the first edition of the M38 Operators Manual, TM9-804, September 1950 there's a photo (Figure 71 on page 175) that shows the circuit breaker mounted but the wire management clamp is missing (shows its mounting screws only).

I had forgot i have a copy of the prototype manual and the dash lights and high beam indicator connectors are clipped into them I guess so they don't rattle around behind the dash.Also the prototype had shields over both drive shafts. |

I assume by "prototype" you mean the first 6 pilot models used for testing?
The M38 Reference Guide (book) calls them "prototype" models but the captions on the Army photographs in the Guide call them "pilot" models.
Six of one, half-dozen of the other I suppose.
Could be mistaken, but don't believe the pilot models had a separate manual.
Pretty sure the September 1950 Army manual TM9-804 covered all production M38's until that manual was replaced by TM9-8012 in January 1956.
Never heard that any M38 had shields or guards on the drive shafts.
I recall reading somewhere that some CJ "farm jeeps" had them to keep hay from wrapping around the driveshafts while in the fields.
Can you point us to a reference about driveshaft shields on the M38? _________________ Ron D.

I have all the manuals from the Pilot Vehicle and Sept. 1950 9-804 and all manuals through 1956.The only one I am missing is SNL G740 1951. |
