NAS preceding any parts number indicates that parts was designed and built to the Navy/Army Standard Specification and a short while later about 1952 created the MS meaning the part or system was built to Military Specification.
The MS # for the fuel quantity float is: MS 500040

Sorry yes I have a m38a1 24 Volts. I have chequed the instrument is OK, never work OK. I have to buy a fuel level sender and I wanto to check it.BUt I have to check the grounding resistence. Good point
