I'd like to replace the Cuno filter on my M38 with a canister filter. I have the canister and filter but need a little clarification as to where/how the hose go. Can I just use the two lines from the Cuno filter?

the top hose on the canaster connects behind the fuel pump and the bottom goes to the connection near the top of the water pump. The last time I changed these I made new lines out of high temp transmission lines. Fram makes a replacement filter I can look up the number if you need it.

I personally prefer the smaller, less obtrusive, factory correct and completely adequate for a partial flow system Cuno filter. The military Junior filter is correct for a motor pool resto or driver. If accuracy is not important then a more modern spinon with a flow restrictor makes more sense and less mess.

The Cuno and Junior lines are different in length and configuration.

This is the Cuno. Line going left goes to fitting by fuel pump. Line straight forward goes to timing cover.


Here's the MD engine (NOS in the 1962 dated crate) with a military junior cannister filter.

Is the military junior canister filter the same as the Military standard canister filter? If not what is the difference?

Wes, what are the two tubes under the oil filter? One is connected to the water jacket on the head.

I converted to a spin on oil filter on my M38 because I drive mine around a lot in the warmer seasons and I like the easy and sanitary oil changing it permits. If the next man wants that canister oil filter... he can have the one I took off my Jeep ...when I sell it to him.

Ken, the two tubes are vacuum lines.

Military Standard encompasses three military oil filters.

The military junior (smallest for engines less than 224 cu inches) and military senior base mounted and military senior strap mounted both are used on engines over 224 Cu. Inches.
