M38A1 F134 engine .. I have problems with the carburetor on my Jeep, I use the original Carter carburetor, which has been refurbished with new repair kits. To begin with, the engine went almost perfectly, but now after getting 100 km's driving the engine started to go bad, it's almost as if the petrol / air mixture is too rich again the black smoke and can not go idle. float height is adjusted to 9 / 64 inch. Fitted new spark plugs and points. adjusted to a distance of 0.020 inch. ignition timing is 5 degrees before TDC. I'm thinking now whether I should change the old carburetor with a new Solex carburetor from such QTM Jeep Party or perhaps would be a come help me get the old carburetor to function perfectly.
Sincerely, Flemming (Denmark)
Which carb overhaul kit did you use? If it was an old new stock military kit dated before 1985 it probably contained rubber diaphragms that are no longer compatible with today's petrol. Without removing the carb just remove the two diaphragm housings and inspect the diaphragms. If they have deteriorated and leak then purchase a modern materials kit from Midwest Military http://www.midwestmil.com/ or AJP http://www.armyjeepparts.com/ . _________________ Wes K

I had the same problem 5 months with my NEW, NOT old stock rebuilt kit. It ran great for 6 months then had your same problems and after all the trouble shooting, it was the diaphrams causing the problems, the bad diaphrams were grey in color. I purchased a new kit from mid west and the diaphrams that came in that kit are red, after a quick rebuild again, it runs great again. when you order the new kit consider getting the major rebuild kit it comes with alot more parts such as new screws and other items.
