I HAVE A 52 M38 THAT STARTS FINE WHEN COLD, BUT WILL NOT START WHEN AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATUR. IN THE PAST REGAPPING THE POINTS HAS SOLVED THE PROBLEM. THAT NO LONGER HELPS.
IT WILL START WHEN HOT IF I PULL IT OR COAST IT DOWNHILL AND POP THE CLUTCH.
IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED THAT I MAY HAVE WEAK COIL. IS THERE A WAY TO TROUBLESHOOT TO CONFERM BEFORE SPENDING THE $60.00?
Three options depending on your available tools and experience:
1-Ohm the coil out primary and secondary both cold and hot.
2-Perform current draw test.
3-Substitute a known good coil.
Your symptoms point towards a weak coil but could also be timing either too far retarded or too far advanced. This causes the harder cranking causing the starter to draw too much current and that results in the coil not getting enough voltage during start.
Also a weak starter will turn very slow when the engine is hot and can draw too much current and result in the same problem for the coil.
When you pull or push start her when hot does it fire immediately? _________________ Wes K
