The felt seal is helpful for keeping grit away from the rubber garlock type seal and this lengthens the life of the rubber seal.
The gasket was originally used between the edge of the garlock oil seal assembly to seal it to the front of the diff case. Many modern seals have a soft coating on them that makes the use of the original gasket unecessary. The felt seal is getting harder to find but some vendors still carry them and you can also make one from flat felt stock.
As a related note be sure to put a light coat of sealant on the splines before you slide the yoke (companion flange) on the pinion shaft. _________________ Wes K
