I know that all M38 jeeps were originally painted OD 2340. My question is this, when the change came in the late fifties to 24087 what happened to all of the vehicles that were painted OD 2340? Were they all repainted to the new color over time or did they remain the original color until they left the service. I'm guessing it was a combination of both. If you were trying to capture the typical M38 in the late fifties early sixties would 24087 be the right choice? Thanks for your thoughts.

I know of at least one (mine) that was repainted, presumably before it left the service. Below the multiple layers of various colors of civvy paints and on top of the two original layers of 2340 is a thick layer of a darker, browner OD on the external surfaces (not, for example, on the inside of the glove box door). Hood numbers (and hardtop numbers in this case) were re-stenciled onto the newer layer. _________________ Jim McKim

Slowly turning rusty parts into OD parts
The only time the Army scheduled a jeep for repaint when the paint on it was adequate and in reasonable shape was when the vehicle was going to be used for a special purpose. IE VIP jeep, MP jeep EOD jeep and etc. Also during an IRAN type inspection and overhaul of the vehicle at a depot.
The Military had and still has plenty of policy manuals and regulations that repeatedly say the same thing. No unnecessary repainting will be done. This rule also applied to hood number systems. When the systems changed IE USA to US Army the regulations that created the change specified it was not to be done unless the vehicle was in need of a repaint.
So many jeeps were mustered out surplus with the OD 2430 still on them. They were the lucky ones. The unlucky ones got that nasty deep brown 24087 and we all know what that looks like. _________________ Wes K
