I guess Wes is right about that. That surprised me, I thought most owners were already aware of that.

For anyone interested in the pioneer tools, I suggest starting with this webpage http://jeepdraw.com/John_Barton1_Shovels.html. Besides the size, this page also shows the manufacturer's markings that are commonly found on the .GOV issue pioneer tools.

Apparently, at some point, the government changed the spec regarding the maximum size of the tools. The new longer tools will fit the Deuce and HMMVs, etc but are too long for the Jeeps and the M37s. ALL of the tools that I've found for sale by the MV suppliers only fit the Deuce and other late model vehicles so you need to be careful when buying them. EVEN if they claim to fit the Jeeps, you need to verify their length because "Fits a Jeep" might man nothing more than they were able to lay it in the back behind the seats!
