I was looking at a 54' a1c. Today and appears complete except for the barrel hold down clamp and the rear data plate. I had looked up several bits of info about the a1c's before going to look at it but the big question is that it has a set of rear helper coils that look like they were original. Now in all the a1c info I have not seen anyone mention them. It seams obvious with the weight of the recoilless rifle that they would be a big help. So where they original or an add on MWO or something added post Army life??

Here's a link to a site where a guy restored what apparently
was an unrestored, original "C".

Take that with whatever grain of salt you wish.

In the resto photos is a pic of the frame with engine and
running gear, including the helper coils you describe.

If you are restoring with the field piece I don't know how
you'd drive it without the coils.

Thanks for the info on the a1c's. The shame is now the guy is waffling on wanting to sell it. It has sentimental value because his grand pa drove it for years around the farm. So in other words it's going to sit there and rot into the ground worse than it already is. I'll post a few pics tomorrow when I get to a computer to upload them.

There are lots of old vehicles relatively rust free dying a slow
death in the Midwest. Same issue, the owners have no
enthusiasm or drive to save and or restore, but be damned if they
would part with it to someone that would because (insert
various versions of family members owning it so) sentimental
value.

So they sit there and return to nature.

Sad.

Here were a couple of pics I took. Is a shame because if this thing sits for much longer there will be nothing left of it to work with. The rear leaf springs had rusted completely in half causing the rear axle to roll up under the body.

Don't give up!! Keep talking with the owner from time to time. Keep it light don't hound him on buying it but keep your name up front with him as at some point, it will be sold. If money is an issue--make him an offer that is more than someone who would want it for parts or a hunting buggy will give for it and strong enough that he would not give up the small difference just so his buddy can have it. For a restoration project, you can afford to give more for it because it is a more or less a complete M38A1C (less small parts to find and buy) that has had little "hacking" done to it (reversing what someone else did) and it also has a lot of it's pedigree--hood number, unit numbers etc.(seldom seen and usually made up) As the seed gets planted and he checks around, do not be surprised if he calls you up and takes your offer. The main thing is to maintain contact with him.

I have bought an original M38 (with military release paper work) and a CJV/35U doing the above. Did I give too much for them--depends on who you are talking too--the owner thinks he made out like a bandit and those in the MV collecting circle thinks I stole them.

From the pictures, I can see that the A1C would make an excellent starting point for such a uncommon M38A1.

Yep, I don't plan on giving up. It's my son's baseball coach so I'll just keep the bug in his ear about it. And hopefully he move off it and I can drag it home and start work on it. Heck I even offered to help him work on it if he keeps it.
