The instrument panel in my '55 A1 is the later style, with the small panel lamps and hi-beam indicator. I thought it should have the earlier version, but the ORD does a great job listing SN cutoffs and mine should be the latter. Now my wiring harness is a mess and I'll be restoring it this spring, but I got thinking about the later style panel lamp and hi-beam indicator sockets........is the M38A1 (and M170) the only M-Series vehicles to use the later style lamps with Douglas connectors? Coming from the M37 world the later smaller panel lamps changed with the B1 version and only used the rubber Packard connectors. The M715 only used the later style lamps with Packards. I think the M151 only used Packards as well. Now the lamp sockets are almost identical between the Douglas and Packard versions......but the Douglas style has the two little tits on it to engage the female Douglas shell. So is that Douglas socket only used on the M38A1 and M170?
Have you compared the part number of the late lamp sockets in the M38A1 ORD's with the part numbers of the lamp sockets in the M37B1 ORD and the M151, M715 ORD's? _________________ Wes K

Hi Wes,
No, I haven't looked them up yet........but I do have one of each socket in front of me and they are different where the connector attaches. Having never seen the later style panel lights that worked with Douglas connectors I always assumed the change in lamp socked design was done because of the Packard connector switch......that's why I find the A1 socket so interesting. I don't think it was used on any other MV in that Douglas configuration.
