I just bought an NOS M38 air cleaner for my M38 MC-23923.
It has all the correct bells, whistles and vent fittings for an M38, so I think I scored. It still has all the cosmoline saturated fiber tape covering up the openings.
But.... it is BLACK?? I thought everything is OD!!??
Then I sand back my Air cleaner brackets, and they are black, too.... but they might not be original M38
Can't find any guidance in Miller's M38 Reference Guide on paint colors. And photos I can find have OD or black.
Anyone have a "difinative opinion" on what is correct? Any other parts that should be black?
Thanks,
Jeff
PS: I bet WESK has a color guide somewhere on the forum and I couldn't find it! _________________ 1951 M38 restoration project - Flightline Jeep MC 23923 DoD 6-51

Thanks Wes.
Great tip on using GOOGLE for search. I am often frustrated with the number of hits you get with the forum search.
Thanks again,

Take a look at M38 factory production line photos:
Certainly looks like black on both the M38 & the CJ!
If you took note this M38 is before sn MC20600. It has the firewall mounted radio ignition noise filter. And it even has the early Aux Power Plug just to the right of the noise filter.
Hi Brian, I don't think your link is working. It just takes me to the search request.

I concur with Brian... Wes' reference photos are unmistakable. The brackets came out of the same bin as the CJ's.
Wouldn't want to mess with the gal working on the CJ....
Thanks for the photo Wes,

Also of interest when I looked at the larger image, it is interesting the mix of Military, CJ, and even an auto (see door open on end of the line) all moving down the same assembly line. Maybe a Kaiser Deluxe or Aero???
These woman would be good to get the high mix assembly correct... or maybe they didn't....
Sure wish my sheet metal looked like the M38 in the foreground. These jeeps left the factory pretty straight!

Hi Guys,
Ok, this is probably a stupid question..........but weren't the M38's made from 1949 to 1952? Or more simply......weren't they made AFTER the war? So why are all the folks in the pics women? Didn't all the men come back after the war and resume the jobs they had in the Willys plant before the war? I don't see a single guy in the pic.
M38 production was Sep 1950 thru Jul 1952. That photo was a very small segment of the production line and it was a light duty section for wiring & etc. It was not uncommon at all in the 50's & 60's to see women working on assembly lines in all industries.
There were plenty of men working that same production line.
