OK, so I have a Marine Ordinance M38A1 and need to replace rear bumper (crossmember). None are available so I am going with std bumper. Most pictures show only two bumperretes and a pintle installed on the bumper - was the pintle std on the M38A1? Also, was lifting shackles always installed, since I can't see these I assume they may be hidden under the bumperrette?

Why are rear end pics so rare of early Willys ......arghhhh

The Marines used a special kit they installed in the field to replace the original front and rear crossmembers. If you utilize my photo alblum where I have hundreds of technical photos you'll find answers very quickly: http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?set_albumName=Wes-Knettle&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

Note, my album is the 2nd album on the "Member's Albums" page.

These are photos of the stock front & rear M38A1 as delivered by Willys to all the services.

Minus the gas can & spare

This sub-album of mine covers the USMC M38A1: http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules.php?set_albumName=album324&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

This is how the Marines field modified the M38A1 front & rear crossmembers

This is the official Marine Corp documents used for the field modification by them.

This is the kit and is still found in kit form today.

Thx Wes, I had all the pics on the Marine setup but needed the non-marine M38A1 - i can see from the rear view that the lifting shackles are hidden underneath the bumperrettes. thanks!

I also moved your post to the correct board "Technical".

If you are looking for the Marine Corps rear crossmember kit, Surplus City in California has them. The standard crossmember can be purchased thru Midwest Military as they manufacture them in house.
