When re-installing my parking brake drum and companion flange for the drive shaft I noticed that the 4 bolts that hold the brake drum, companion flange and u-joint were not in very good shape. The bolt is supposed to be 3/8 X 1 3/8 NF. The shank on the both is about 7/8 and the treads about 1/2 inches.
The only grade 8 bolts I have found locally are 3/8 x 1 1/2 but have no shank, they are threaded from the bolt head to the end.
I think that the extra 1/8 inch in length is probably not a problem but I don't know if it is important that the bolt have the un-threaded shank or not.

Hi Ralph,
I think the shank is there for a reason. As I'm a rookie --- don't ask me why (that's a Wes question). I didn't look up your bolts in the ORD9, but suspect maybe they're also fine thread?
I've had better luck finding fine threaded bolts with shanks than those with coarse thread.
Bolts used particularly in shear applications normally have a smooth close tolerance shank to take that kind of loading. Find the correct bolts.
Do Not Use Stainless substitutes they are considerably weaker and softer then standard cadmium plated steel bolts.

The only number that offered any help was the Spicer/Dana # 6-73-122 yielded a page with a Spicer/Dana parts catalog dated 2004. You should download a PDF copy!
The only other direction I could steer you is to an AN6- bolt with the same length shank as the spicer bolt. Just measure that smmoth shank which is also often referred to as grip length and compare it to an AN6- Catalog for the closest matching grip length. Keep in mind that your grip length should never be greater than the combined thickness of the joined materials!
