The next Project thread from me.
Some years ago, I bought a M38A1, which was complete with canvas top, doors, side curtains and was road legal and titled in Germany, until early in the nineties.
The Jeep comes from Denmark, was not drivable and had a not inconsiderable problem with rust.
Typical for vehicles from Denmark, I think.
Not the best climatic conditions for older vehicles.
But it was not expensive, so I take it.
To get the engine running was not a problem, the oilpump was faulty.
I took the Jeep apart, for storage and to rebuilt it later.
One time, the crankshaft and the gearbox found their way into my M38. nice to have spare parts, when you in need of them.
The years passed, other projects were more important, but the Jeep (in parts) was still there.
Occasionally, I rebuilt the engine ,the gearbox, do the springs and sand blast and painting some small parts. The frame I have pre cleaned for blasting.
This was in April 2011
The stripped and pre cleaned frame.
As the body, so the frame has some rust.
A lot of rust.
The spring bushing’s are also gone to beyond.
Some small parts for re use
Some fitting
Digging in the dirt and find a crack
The first coat of black. After the next one the Sprigs are ready for assembly.
Then, again, the years passed.
This year, I resume the project.
Before I do the frame, I had to overhaul the axles.
Need to be cleaned
The last maintanance is long, very long ago
The Diff looks very good
Not so the wearing parts
Some soaking in thinner
So the blasting is easyer.
Screws and plugs ready for use
Knuckles primed
Axle primed
New Shells installed
Usefull to clean the threads
New bearings
Cleaned and re packed with grease,
The front axle is ready.
Continue with the rear axle.
Again, cleaning first.
Looks like somebody once trys to remove the hub without a puller.
Yes, Bubba is all around the world.
Old, but it works fine for that.
This side looks a little bit like grease, the other side do not.
The bearings are gone
The hubs re shaped and primed
Primed
When I start with my hobby, many years ago, I bough those bearings at my first parts collect trip, but never use them until this time.
First coat drab.
The shimms are rusty. Some time in citric acid and they are reuseble
Right end play
Next for drab
Time for the frame again
The rear crossmember was not the only rusted part
Not seen something like that before.
After the welding was finished, I blasted the frame
Primed it
And painted it
Those Ford GPW guys will hate me for that.
Years ago I got a box full of those original Eyebolt’s
Many years ago I bough a Repair kit with this sector shaft comes from.
Get in the box only with a little ginding.
The worm needed only a nice clean up
How to hold the balls for assambling,
And installed
How you should use the TM’s if you are not for sure, how it goes, for example
And installed
All hoses and lines installed
Ready for the power plant
Need to install the exhaust.
Except the muffler, the pipes are the old ones.
The muffler is a repro, so the tail pipe does not fit from the angle.
So I took a pipe from a VW Golf for adaption.
Need the flangle to be attached, blasted and coated
So the Frame is done first of all
So far so good up to here, no trace of hardcore yet.
But this thread will be continued.
Sincerely yours
Frank

Awesome progress! You clearly have a very well equipped shop and tool box. Looking very good! _________________ Wes K

Thank you,
So it goes on.
Some boxes full of stuff
Do you guys know that a normal radiator can burn?
When I took it apart, I discovered some deposits, like tar.
Even if the engine is at operating temperature,
You don’t get something like that removed with any miracle cure.
Nice to have a specialist near by
t’s just stupid that he has stopped repairing radiators and only swaps modern, common ones.
The building, where the radiator shop is, itself is very interesting and also a steeped in history.
It was,as can be seen, the headquarters in (West) Berlin
and the location for the Billy Wilder comedy “one, two, three, filmed in 1961 with James Cagney as C.R. Macnamara, Coca Cola’s head of West Berlin Operations
O.K. had an other one for spare to install
Because of a dent,
I had to take it apart for fixing the damage,
so the next step was not so big.
The most work was done,
I found a dealer who sells original NOS“early“grill’s for a fair price.
Absolutely the better choice.
Lucky me.
Yet again, no trace of real hardcore.
Sincerely yours
Frank

Great restoration, impressively accurate pictures, professional work! And I also like the photo of the Coca Cola Company from the movie: 1-2-3, I'd love to see it live. Keep it up!
