Hi all,
today the parts to fix the brakes on the back of my son's Dana 44 equiped 1997 TJ arrived.
Looking at the brake cyclinders they look very similar to the M38A1 brake cyclinders that are fitted to my Korean rebuilt M38.
I haven't pulled the wheels off the M38 to check but does anybody know if they are the same?
Have you compared part numbers and bore size (Diameter & length)? The choices for your M38 are Bendix 302094, Wagner Electric FD13093B, or FD16535, ORD #'s 7697455 or 8328443. You simply run a google cross reference check against other available cylinders. M38 correct part numbers will have 1" bore in front and 3/4" bore in back. I will also mention that the rear cylinders on the M38 were superseded in Army Stocks with the M38A1 cylinders. You can easily spot these changes by reading your ORD 9 carefully. The third column of the parts lists is titled Ordnance Stock No. The first vehicle a part is used on is indicated in the Army supply system by the GXXX prefix. G740 = M38 and G758 = M38A1.

An easy way to check compatibility between an old Jeep and a modern Jeep.....the ORD 9 obviously won't mention the new stuff!...
Go to an auto parts store and ask them for the modern part #, then ask for a cross reference.... if it will fit your M38, the computer will tell them.
And if you are willing to trust me, I did a check on NAPA Online for both and the numbers did not match.(I cheated by using the CJ-5 on their dropdown, as they did not have the A1.
Conversely, take the Wagner number Wesk provided...IF IT IS A WAGNER NUMBER and not a military number... and see if it will fit the TJ. When I need brake cylinder for my car (that's not in the computer so the part guys are not happy), NAPA gives me Wagner parts. _________________ 1955 M38A1 MD 82551

That can be a lot of work plus placing a lot of trust in the knowlege and experience of a young person operating a computer in a parts store. Now a days with Google and etc. you can do the system search yourself. The fastest result I get is from using the latest Willys part number 807357.
