My valve guides have considerable side to side play in them. Front to back tolerances seem tighter. Is this normal? I punched 1 intake guide and 1 exhaust guide out and am going to replace all of them. Is there anything I need to know like how much to leave on the top side. I removed the valve adjusters on the 2 I removed. I did not think there was enough clearance for the guides to come out if I left the adjusters in. Was I correct in that assumption? Needless to say the engine is still installed.

Thanks,
Bob

All the necessary info is in the manuals (the civvy SM1002 has better illustrations). Removing adjusters is a good idea just for the sake of preventing any damage. Remember the valve face to seat relationship depends on the straightness of the guide's bore which must be dead nuts on. Otherwise valve faces will not sit concentric on seats and compressions will suffer considerably. Remember that each guide must be checked and if needed reamed to provide the correct amount of stem clearance.

Thanks Wes,
I found detailed information on the G503 site as well. You also had posted information that was helpful (as usual). I am in process of doing exactly what you said and have all new guides to insert. Man was 3 of them tough to get out. I had to grind the seat on #1. It was in bad shape but it lapped good. This engine is my 1943. I ground them less than 2 years ago but must have had my head somewhere else when I set up #1.
Thanks again for your help on this and other posts. This group is helpful and entertaining in many ways.
Bob
