PostPosted: Wed Aug 04, 2010 4:38 pm    Post subject: Grill BO Marker Lens Difference? Reply with quote

I have two sets of doors to the grill marker lights for my M38 however they are different. One set has the lens split into two sections and the other set has the lens split into four sections.
Which is correct for the M38?

Thanks
Pat

Are they both made by Hall Lamp?

One is made by "AWA" and the other has a small oval boss on the bottom and the word "TOP".

I just want to put the correct one on my wife's M38. I have never noticed the difference before.

The one on the left is for the blackout stop light, the one on the right is the blackout running light

Sorry Chuck I am not following you on this one? Stop light on the grill?
I understand the reasoning behind the cut-outs and that they appear to be one light at a certain distance in the dark therfore you can judge distance of a vehicle by how many white spots you can see.

Where were the two different marker light covers used?
ie. M38 MB/GPW M38A1....

On some M series vehicles there was a seperate blackout stop light on the right rear when there were two red tailights as on the M151 A1.You can do this on yours.
M series jeeps used two of the split blackout marker lights in the grill.

Just out of curiosity....can you post some pictures of the backside of these two covers? The reason I ask.....I have two of the BO marker lamps in my a-1 grill but neither of them have any kind of internal "doors"......just the wide open rectangular plastic lense. Its very obvious on mine that the aluminum or pewter that holds in the lense was broken away releasing the lense from the cover.....and I'm wondering if this was done to remove the "doors". I'm thinking about having a solid block of plexiglass cut to replace my lenses (since they are pretty well mukked up) and gluing it into place in the cover. Right now they are only held in-place by the rubber gasket. This is all that was left of my lights...

The wrinkled one on the right has "STOP" across the top.

Both military field installed turn signal kits add the small diameter BO stop lamp above the original right tail lamp when they replace the original BO stop with the red lens.

Sorry Wesk the one on the right has the word "TOP" not stop at the top.
Both covers have the number "8694461" on the inside and the one cover made by AWA CORP. has the number "MS 51302-1 24V" on the bottom front.

I still don't know the application for either one, and they are very different from one another.
I just want to make sure that I install the correct one on my wife's jeep.
These are the covers for the marker lights mounted in the grill of a M38, not the for the same lights mounted on the front top of each fender with the amber lens for the signal conversion kit. And not on the rear of the jeep.

Here is the picture requested by idiocrates of the inside, sorry for the fuzzy pic.

The one on the left is an add-on right rear stop lamp (single light section in middle). The one on the right is a front marker lamp (pair of cat eyes). The right one can be used for the front marker light but it is actually a M151 era light assy.

When you add the military turn signal kits the M38 you must use a second left tail light assy with a red lens on the right. You then loose the original right side BO stop light. The kits have you install that unit to the left in your photo just above the new right tail light assy.

If you want to know which is correct for a M38 in factory class then the answer is neither.

As you can see in these pages from MWO 9-2300-263-20 the extra left tail light assy with the red service stop light lens ORD # 8378785 is added to the kit list as is the tail stop light assy ORD # 8741645 which contains the lens in your left photo.

Here you see a couple of suggested ways to piggy back the little BO Stop lamp on the new right rear tail light assy.

Thanks Wes
That really clarifies things a lot and now I have learned something new about the M38.
Now where can a person get a copy of this manual to print off? I have looked in the downloads sections however with no luck.

I would like to install the lights the correct way and this manual should be a great help.

Also does anyone have an image of the correct marker light lens cover for the M38?

Thanks in advance.

Pat

Hello Pat,

The correct BO marker door/lens assy would look like the right one in your photo and have ORD PN 's (either) 7729790 or 7729791. The w/lens assy may have the Hall # 21208. The entire light assy would be OED# 7723899, Hall # 445491.

I have the early M series turn signal MWO on my photo site:
