Hi my name is Bob, i am a new member here and i am in dire need of help with my M38 fuel lines and vacuum lines. I have had the engine rebuilt and have everything back together except the fuel lines and vacuum and have no idea how to install them. If i could get a detailed picture of the lines installed i would appreciate it. Thanks Bob

Bob,

Are you installing pre-formed lines or will you be forming these yourself? If you need dimensions for bending the lines, I can't help much (my lines are rerouted to an electric fuel pump). However, if you just need to know where lines connect, the manual has some good illustrations showing the installed locations of the lines. If that's the case, I can look up the appropriate page numbers.

Bob Westerman put a lot of time into his vent line project and all you need to do is determine weather you are early or late M38 vent system.

The ORD 9 SNL G-740 has very good illustrations of the fuel plumbing and the vent system. The TM's 9-804, -8012, -1804A and -1804B also have many illustrations that help with small sections of the plumbing.

I have ordered pre formed fuel lines. We would like to route them factory.

What is ORD 9 SNL G-740 and where can I find it ? Also this The TM's 9-804, -8012, -1804A and -1804B .

Sorry but I am new to this and am not sure where to find this info.

Bob,

The manuals can be found in the downloads section of the site in the M38 section. They are really useful. If you'll be doing a lot of restoration, I'd encourage buying printed versions as well. But, the pdfs definitely get the job done. I just don't like using my computer with greasy fingers. Wink

ORD 9 SNL G-740 is the Army supply parts manual. Lists all replaceable parst and has a large amount of excellant illustrations.

TM 9-804 is the early M38 Operator's and Organizational Maintenance Manual
TM 9-8012 is the late M38 Operator's and Organizational Maintenance Manual

TM 9-1804A Is the heavy maintenance manual for the engine and clutch.
TM 9-1804B is the heavy maintenance manual for the chassis, running gear and body.

Click on the "Downloads" link and go to the M38 data.

The Army published separate manuals for the accesories so if you need to repair or overhaul starters, generators voltage regulators, fuel pumps and carbs and etc you will need the overhaul manual for that accessory group. When you first joined this group we sent you a survey form for you to complete on your jeep and a listing of all manuals and their titles that apply to your jeep. If you lost or discarded these two items let me know and I will resend them.

I see from your pic post here that the MD Juan fuel tank is slightly larger than the orig M38 fuel tank. I'm putting in my MDJ tank now and the neck is not centered in the sidewall hole because of the tank size (also the back hold down tab is off just a little like you noted in one of the pict's). Is there a trick in making it fit better in the sidewall opening or am I SOL that way? Is the only thing that can be done is to cut the sidewall fuel neck rubber gasket to make things work? Anybody else have any ideas?

Guys , here is some pics of the Jeep. Thanks for all tha help we have figured out the fuel line routing . Now we are working on the vacuum lines. still alittle unsure on these. We are missing some fitting and stuff so it is a little hard to tell where every thing goes.

It would be best to ask that question of the engine rebuilder since the warranty on your engine is his risk.

Well got it all together and tried to fire it today. For some reason we are not getting fuel. We just had the fuel pump rebuilt.

Is there any trick to priming the pump ?
Also can someone tell me what the lever on the side of the pump is?

We took the fuel line loose at the carb and turned the engine over and can't get fuel to the carb.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Guess it could be the fuel pump ?

Turn the fuel supply line valve on. It's down at the base of the firewall, driver's side just behind the steering gear.

There is no shut off, it has been removed. Do you know what the lever on the fuel pump is for? Thanks Bob
