I'm about to tear into my jeep timing. I've been driving around with my timing at about a minus 15 degrees BTDC as opposed to the correct setting of minus 5 degrees.

The reason is that my distributor's input Douglas Connector is tight against my generator and I can't rotate the distributor anymore counter-clockwise to get any closer to the minus 5 degrees.

So, it looks to me that I have to designate a different position on my distributor as number one. (Unless there's a secret that I need to know

Based on all the wonderful knowledge here, which way should I go? Right now my number 1 is the forward lower position. My guess is that I'll have to reposition to the upper forward position, true?

Please, I need some advice before I tear into it.

The restricted travel is caused by improper distributor to oil pump indexing. If you want it right get into your engine service manual and follow the directions for indexing the oil pump and then follow the directions for installing the distributor. Then go to our downloads page and download my interactions for timing the distributor.

Thank you gentlemen! I'm not going to try to move the wires around again! Once I got here to my shop, I found out that I'm indeed on lower back for #1. Just no room to move around.

I'm sure that's whats been my troubles all along. I jump into that as soon as I get a new oil pump gasket.

Got all the manuals and all the downloads. BTW, thank you all for that as well.

You all are a great resource!
