I want to put a PTO winch on my 1954 M38A1 and I have read that the Ramsey 50 was the right model but they appear to be about impossible to find. I have located a Ramsey 200L (8,000 lb), does anyone know if this winch will work on my jeep? Also did the M38A1 get a different bumper with the winch rollers on it when a winch was installed?

I bought a Ramsey 200L. I had to re-clock it (which is super easy), and otherwise it seems to fit so far. I'm not sure if the driveshaft clears everything, I'm still dropping the engine back into my vehicle, but it looks like it does. Otherwise, I'll just need to clock it more. The winch I got came in a winch mounting frame. With some fabrication, I can make short metal plates that will connect it to the frame. _________________ 1952 M38A1
Marine core reinforced rear bumper, military transistorized turn signal upgrade, arctic heater, 11" drum brakes, 200L PTO winch, Huffy overdrive, deep water fording kit, RT 68 vehicle mounted radio, Trac Locs front and rear.

The 200 series was available for the CJ5 so it stands to reason it will fit in the front frame area of the M38A1. It will not fit in the military mounting brackets.
Also keep in mind the military 50 winch is designed to be use with the military exhaust system. The 200 was used with the civvy exhaust system. _________________ Wes K

Don't know if these guys are still in business. They purchased tooling from Ramsey and made model 50 or model 50R winches for the M38 and M38A1. The price was listed at $5,995.00. Their names and telephone numbers I have are Rod Nowland @ 251-831-3551 and Jeff Smith @ 850-475-5030. I found this info on 1/22/2012 but their dates were listed April/May of 2006. Best of luck!
Jeff Smith closed his doors 4 or 5 years ago. Rod still makes wood fillers and wood radio rack spacers for the jeeps. I wasn't aware they had purchased tooling and production rights from Ramsey. What link did you find that info at? _________________ Wes K
