I have a spare tire bracket the square mount that the reflector mounts to it is marked S-T made in usa. I have compared it to others and it is thicker and has different stud style. the tire mount too varies in thickness for ones i have seen. how does one know what is original, and replacement, to reproduction?

Though Ryan Miller covers this to some extent in his M38 parts guide I do not believe a clear cut chronology of development has been established yet, other than early two piece (M38)(M38A1 thru MD40951) and later welded (M38A1 after MD40951) with a slight variation in gussets in the top piece (small hole vs large hole). Stampings and etc are not known to me.
