The orignal winch factory supplied on a very M38's was the Ramsey model 50 and the Ramsey 105 PTO. The 50 is rare and is only a 3500 lb winch. The field replacement was the 5000 lb Ramsey 50R. Both of these were peculiar to military applications only and are both difficult to locate complete and when you do find one they are priced over $2000. These military setups used a very narrow PTO (105) that did not interfere with the exhaust.

The civvy Ramsey 200 will fit but the civvy PTO's are wider and require exhaust pipe mods.

As with any used gear boxes and mechanical winches you must thoroughly inspect before you buy. Not looking closely can cost you dearly when trying to find new parts which are not cheap.

There's a ton of technical info illustrated in my photo albums:

Never even heard of him.

When shopping for a Ramsey 50 or 50r make sure you dont purchase the ramsey y50r. The Y50r case is slightly different shape and much more narrow so much so you can not run the pto shaft. However you could have a machine shop widen it and get close to the look of an orginal ramsey 50r
