When you ask for photos of the original M38 gauges try to be specific about which original M38 gauges. Not just Coolant, amps / volts, oil press, fuel quantity or speedo but also which issue. The first type M38 gauges were old 6 volt units with 90 Ohm resisters added to them for fuel quantity, oil pressure & coolant temp. This is for MC10001 thru MC17855.
The straight 24V gauges came at SN MC17856 & were used with this cluster having the CB and harness clip mounted to the panel thru MC65042.
The late style cluster with the same 28V gauges but without the CB and harness clip came at MC65043.
You can see a good illustration of the correct gauges used after MC17855 on page 221 in Fig 83 of your TM 9-8012. _________________ Wes K

That's interesting Wes. Did the gauge manufacturers convert
the 6 volt units by providing a lighting window and waterproofing
with Douglas connectors or was that done downstream somewhere?

I guess what I am asking is were these early 6 volt gauges used on early 24 volt jeeps waterproof and have side light windows or did that come later?
I have #MC11481. I am in need of several gauges.
If I can shop for not only 24 volt but 12 or 6 volt gauges and just add the proper resistor it makes my potential supply a little larger.
Just adding a jumper on the back of the gauge to go from wire terminal to Douglas is part of it. The other issue I see is the early 6 volt gauges did not have the side windows for dash lighting.
Thanks,
Bria |

Any of the military vehicle supply houses should have either repro or original gauges for you. If your vehicle is 24 v there are gauges that would have been used on other 24 v M-series vehicles that will work. Some of the later gauges have Parker rubber connectors rather than the metal shell Douglas types. The bezel around the gauge face is different as well. But the wiring can be adapted. I've recently seen in dealer advertising complete Douglas type repro gauges sold as a set - I think they are recent manufacture. Don't know anything about quality for them but it must be good. _________________ 1951 M38 |

Hi Wes,
I was searching for suppliers of light fixtures, such as the sockets, etc.
I know I saw a list somewhere in the last couple of days on one of these pages but did not save it and now can't find the thing. I need a few replacement sockets.
I also was looking at your CJV35 pages. On page 8 there is a shot of the dash including the gauge panel. I am not familiar with the MB's or GPW's (and am not that familiar with the M38 but trying), but on that gauge panel there appears to be a dash light at the very top of the gauge panel. Assuming, and that is a lot, that it is indeed a dash light might this be a light for illuminating the 6 volt gauges, suggesting that the gauges did not have the side lights in them on later M38 24 volt jobs?
Thanks,
Brian |

It is a dash light and yes it could suggest the CJV35 gauges did not have side windows but then it may simply be the CJV35 dash does not have the two side light type lamps so they used the overhead lamps with off the shelf GI side lighted 6 volt gauges. You'll need to actually get your hand on a set of CJV35 gauges to see. Or ask a CJV35 guy the question. _________________ Wes K

Hello Wes,
If the CJV35 and early M38's used 6 volt gauges with resistors, is it plausible that one could use these same gauges in a 12 volt system with the proper resistor?
How would one determine the proper resistor?
Thanks,
Brian |

The CJV-35 used the same gauges as the late MBs---part numbers are different due to the bezels being painted a different color.
Example from the parts manual.........
648132 AMMETER, 50 amp.,assembly (Same as A-6811, except paint)
It's shown in the V35 parts manual as being "common to W.O. Model MB and W.O. Model CJ-V35/U."
(Note how they have listed the V35 model name.)
These gauges were water resistance, not waterproof and used a single light on the dash, instead of the two lights used on the MBs to light the gauges at night. _________________ Harold W.

Thanks for bailing me out Harold!
Brian,
First of all I do not believe the oil pressure and water temp were electric on the MB and CJV-35/U. They were mechanical gauges.
Second the ammeter was used without any resistors and rated for the amps of the system. 6, 12 & 24 V systems were rated at different max amps. In the M38 the the ammeter did not have a resistor on it but I do not believe it was the MB/CJV-35/U ammeter. To place a resistor in a direct reading ammeter in series is asking for trouble. _________________ Wes K
